This journal has been long overdue. The blog serves as an outlet for me to be introspective and keep track of the twists and turns of my own thinking.
Since leaving my consulting job, life has indeed been fun, arguably a little too much fun- traveling at a whim, attending industry events, enjoying happy hours, hosting friends from abroad, and a lot of alcohol..
While my family thought I was straying from a garden path, I saw the pivot as an opening to a world of possibilities.
Yet comfort can be danger in disguise. Lately, I have been catching with many those who I consider older and wiser. Beyond discussing technology, exciting trends and opportunities, we catch up on life. To summarize, here are a few changes that I need to make and questions to ponder,
a.) Understand what I want.
Sadly, I sometimes make decisions based on how others would perceive me. For example, if I were to take this job, would Mum feel proud? Would I be more respected if I were to do X? It has been a structured path up till this point. I don’t think I have yet reflected deeply enough on what I want, to thus take risk and be at the driver seat of my life. Further, I often find myself getting too excited about topics newly discovered, e.g. FinTech in Africa. Without understanding what I want, I get easily distracted.
b.) Spend more time with people of my age, hungry for success.
Taiwan is comfortable for me. Growing up, attending private schools in Taipei and college in the US, I have a strong network. Many of my friends have family businesses or are at the height of their careers- founders, investors. Yet 10 years ahead, what do I have that can put me on equal footing with my friends? I do desire to make an impact, to do good. Perhaps a bit entrepreneurial? I need to surround myself with people who are equally if not more motivated, driven and perhaps ambitious.
In the next two months, I seek to answer this fundamental question: What do I want? The response to this question shall act as a North Star for guiding my decisions forward.
Further, I will use this blog to log my finding in specific areas that interest me.
Peace!
